Edward NortonNorton May Keep 'Score'By Michael Fleming and Claude BrodesserDaily Variety, Thursday January 27 2000NEW YORK (Variety) - In a high-octane pairing, Edward Norton is near a deal to join Robert De Niro in The Score, which Frank Oz (Bowfinger) will direct this spring. Norton would play a young man who thwarts the retirement plans of a master thief by blackmailing the guy into pulling off one last heist. The Mandalay Pictures drama has been greenlit for a late April start in Montreal. Paramount will distribute. Last seen as an actor in Fight Club, Norton recently completed his directorial debut on Keeping the Faith, a comedy in which he stars with Ben Stiller and Jenna Elfman. It opens April 14. Norton running up 'Score' with a nice paydayHollywood Reporter, 1/27/00Ed Norton is finalizing a deal to star opposite Robert De Niro in Paramount Pictures/Mandalay Pictures' The Score for director Frank Oz. What has the town buzzing is the actor's deal: Norton will be paid a $6.5 million upfront plus 4% of first-dollar gross, sources said Wednesday. That comes after DeNiro landed a $15 million deal to star in November (HR 11/15). Norton's commitment to The Score comes about a month after Ben Affleck dropped out of the project. Gary Foster and Lee Rich will produce the film, which is slated to go into production in San Francisco in March. The script, originally penned by Dan Taylor and last rewritten by Kario Salem, tells the story of a thief who is ready to retire but gets pulled back for one last score when he is blackmailed by a younger thief. The Score is the second production for Mandalay since it landed at Paramount in 1998. Its first, Sleepy Hollow, was released last year and has grossed $96.6 million domestically. Norton's next project is Keeping the Faith, which he produced, directed and stars in with Ben Stiller and Jenna Elfman. He is repped by Endeavor.
