O'Connor blames Shaye for film's hold-up

Gavin O'Connor, whose March 14 release date on "Pride and Glory" was scrapped late last year by New Line, wants answers.
O'Connor is blaming the AWOL status of his movie on New Line chairman Bob Shaye. The writer-director is so incensed that he said he will withhold "Warrior," a script he's due to deliver to the studio in the next few weeks, until he knows the fate of his film. The director is also exploring the possibility of extricating "Pride and Glory" after New Line told him the picture wouldn't likely be released until next year.
Trailers for the film have been running since fall before "No Country for Old Men," "Atonement" and "American Gangster."
New Line wouldn't comment on the situation, but execs are in the final stages of negotiating a new deal with Time Warner and its topper, Jeff Bewkes, that could conceivably downsize the company. A resolution seems reasonable within the next two weeks.
But O'Connor and his stars -- Colin Farrell, Edward Norton, Jon Voight and Noah Emmerich (New Line exec Toby Emmerich's brother) -- are voicing their growing frustration to make sure the industry doesn't think they've made an unreleasable film.
They also hope they can provoke Shaye into showing the guts he displayed in the past on adult-themed gambles like "Seven" and "American History X," which also starred Norton and had plenty of its own production drama.
"It was a joy making the movie, but then something happened internally at that company," O'Connor said. "I don't think Bob Shaye believes in it, and he's decided he'll only release (sure bet) films. He never had the decency to call me. We've delivered something special and unique, a film that's not for everybody but has something to say. We're all heartbroken."
O'Connor is nearly finished writing "Warrior," which he describes as "Gladiator" set within a family of mixed martial arts fighters. The project is constructed to span three films. O'Connor said he made a New Line deal for it because he had such a great experience making the film, but he'll hold it back until he gets answers.
"Pride and Glory" was screened at CAA headquarters late last week to begin getting word out that it may need a new home, though getting another distributor to pay full price to adopt a $30 million orphan won't be easy.
Morality tale focuses on corruption in a family of Gotham cops. The son of an 18-year NYPD veteran, O'Connor and his brother Greg wrote the script with Joe Carnahan, hoping to create a '70s-style film that uses crooked cops as a metaphor for institutional corruption in the power structure.
"Gavin was able to tease out themes that are relevant to my generation and to what this country is going through," Norton said. "This isn't about New Line not knowing the film is strong; I just think there is a paralysis right now that has to do with much bigger issues than any particular film. We're a victim of the moment, and I just hope they will either find a way to give the film its due or graciously let us do it with someone else."
Farrell said: "This is the first time it's happened to me, where a film I believed in so strongly, not only as entertainment but for its pertinent message and great performances, sits on a shelf. This is bizarre."
Voight, who plays the cop family patriarch, is also frustrated, but optimistic.
"It ain't over till it's over," he said. "Obviously, things are going on over there, and I've seen this situation before, where a studio dilemma created hardship for a film of quality. You don't want to put it aside for long, though, because you can lose your momentum."

"There's this rumor going around that [Pride and Glory has been bumped] because it's a mess or it's a really bad film," he began. "I feel the need to kind of speak up, not from my own end but genuinely for Gavin O'Connor because he wrote and directed it. It's just a really really strong piece, but I think New Line lost the bollocks on The Golden Compass…and they literally don't have enough money to market things."

"Pride is a tricky one to market anyways. It's pretty dark…I've seen it. Gavin did a great job and you know, Jon Voight is brilliant in it, and Ed [Norton] is great in it and a really strong cast of supporting characters…it's a really strong piece."

Jan 18, 2008- As I mentioned in yesterday's update, Pride and Glory has been moved from a Mar 2008 release date to a 2009 release date. Today's Variety fills in some of the details. New Line Cinema is moving it's schedule around. It is postponing the film Inkheart from a Mar 18 release date "in part because the studio believed it couldn't adequately market the pic in light of the hit television is taking from the writers strike...In terms of the marketing worries, New Line said it was concerned that the loss of first-run shows would minimize the impact of television spots. It's the first time that a studio publicly expressed such a concern since the strike started." While the article mainly focuses on Inkheart, New Line's decision to postpone Pride and Glory probably follows this same line of reasoning. [Thanks to Robin and Donna for the info!!!]

Jan 17, 2008- Today's LA Times has an article on Colin Farrell. The last sentence of the article notes that Pride and Glory was "recently bumped to a 2009 release date" from its March 14, 2008 slot. Although the Pride and Glory official site still gives the March 14 date, there is no mention of the film on the New Line Cinema official site

Jan 13, 2007- This morning, I came across an article from Canada's National Post called Lucky Streak: Joe Carnahan worried he'd never work in Hollywood again. His action-packed comeback proves fortune favours the bold and found something a little strange. "His screenplay for Pride and Glory, another cop drama -- this one featuring Colin Farrell and Edward Norton--is near completion." Pride and Glory finished filming last year.

Dec 6, 2006- Charity Folks has an auction for two tickets to the Pride and Glory premiere as well as the afterparty. No date has been set for the premiere (I don't think the film has a release date yet). So if you've got the cash to spend, good luck (and why haven't I met you before?)

Jun 13, 2006- It appears that principal photography has been completed on Pride and Glory (if the IMDB P&G message Board is correct).

Apr 28, 2006 In today's Hollywood Reporter it is announced that Jennifer Ehle will replace Samantha Morton. If you've been reading the IMDB Pride and Glory message board for a while, this is not breaking news. What might surprise people who have read the board is that the reason given for Morton leaving the role was scheduling conflicts. I don't traffic in gossip so I feel very stupid in even discussing this subject. We're not going to know definitively whether Morton was fired, quit, or there was a mutual decision for her departure. And we're not going to know the specific reasons that led to the decision. What I think you can take away from the information posted on the board is that it was an abrupt departure that probably had absolutely nothing to do with anyone's schedule. Why am I bringing it up? In the future, I will never read the phrase "scheduling conflicts" in trade papers again without wondering if it is some diplomatic way to report a casting change.

Mar 13, 2006 Today's Variety reports that Jon Voight will replace Nick Nolte

New Line's "Pride and Glory," which director Gavin O'Connor is shooting in New York, has just recast Jon Voight in the role of the patriarch of a cop family. Pic, which stars Edward Norton, Colin Farrell and Noah Emmerich, had Nick Nolte set to play that pivotal role. However, after he'd put in months of research into the role with O'Connor, a chronic knee injury flared up when Nolte got to the set and he was unable to perform.

More pics were taken of EN filming Pride and Glory. These were taken at 15th Ave and 212th Street in Bayside, Queens on March 7th and 8th. Feb 16, 2006 There is a follow-up in the NY Daily News on yesterday's story on NYPD Officer Eric Hernandez being honored in Pride and Glory. It appears that Officer Hernandez's family had not been told of the plans to honor him with a headstone, a plaque at his precinct, and a tribute at the end of the film as well as Colin Farrell attending the funeral and portions of the funeral being filmed. In yesterday's NY Daily News article, his maternal aunt expressed surprise that his mother's side of the family had not been told in advance. In today's article, his father stated that he was informed after the funeral, not before. The main source for yesterday's information was the NYPD football team manager. The NY Daily News article from yesterday also includes a quote from executive producer Marcus Viscidi: "The director's father is retired NYPD. Everything was handled, and meant, in a most respectful way." Unfortunately, this seems to have been mismanaged. The director and/or producer along with an NYPD representative probably should have approached each side of the family quietly for their approval before the funeral or they should not have gone ahead with anything. It makes the difference between a respectful tribute and hard feelings. Since the articles first appeared yesterday, the story has been widely reprinted.

Feb 15, 2006 Today's NY Daily News and Newsday report that NYPD Officer Eric Hernandez, who mas mistakenly shot by another cop, will be honored in Pride and Glory. Officer Hernandez "had agreed along with other members of the NYPD football team to be extras in the film." The film's production company will pay for his cemetery headstone and an honorary plaque in his precinct stationhouse. Colin Farrell attended the funeral on Monday. Portions of the funeral procession were filmed to serve as a guide to help the re-creation of a funeral procession in the film. From the NY Daily News

One of the main characters in the film, which also stars Edward Norton, is a player on a fictional police football team. Hernandez, a star running back on the NYPD squad, was asked to appear in the film to lend the scene some authenticity. The movie crew also rented the NYPD team's jerseys and helmets, Gardner said.
The end of the film will include a tribute to Hernandez, [NYPD football team manager Edward] Gardner said.

Dec 13, 2005 Today's Hollywood Reporter has news on casting. Lake Bell is in negotiations to join the cast. The most important piece of news that I took from the article is that filming is now scheduled to start in February in New York. The casting announcement of EN back in late September stated that filming would begin in Jan. The cast includes EN, Colin Farrell, Nick Nolte, Samantha Morton and Noah Emmerich. New Line Cinema is in negotiations with Edward Norton, Colin Farrell and Noah Emmerich to star in "Pride and Glory," a generational drama about a family of police officers in New York torn apart by a corruption scandal.

Gavin O'Connor will direct a script he wrote with Joe Carnahan. Greg O'Connor is producing. Shooting will begin in January in New York.

Norton is poised to play a homicide detective who is assigned to investigate the precinct run by his older brother (Emmerich). Farrell plays the investigator's best friend, a cop in that precinct who might be dirty himself.

O'Connor began writing the film after his 1999 debut, "Tumbleweeds," and he and his brother have been laboring that long to tell a story that is personal to both. It is being done through their Solaris banner.

"My father was a New York City detective, and I grew up in that world," the director said. "It's a celebration of honest cops, which was everything my father was about. Though it is fictional, it is an homage to my father."

New Line production president Toby Emmerich said he has been a fan of the script for several years.

"This is a police drama that has qualities of family, corruption and redemption that ring true," he said.

O'Connor is working for the first time with Norton and Farrell, but Noah Emmerich has starred i n both of his films, "Tumbleweeds" and "Miracle."

Farrell, who's shooting the Michael Mann-directed "Miami Vice," stars in the upcoming Terrence Malick-directed "The New World" from New Line.

Norton just completed "The Illusionist" and is shooting "The Painted Veil" in China.
