Frida premieres at Venice Film Festival
|
|
The world premiere of Frida opened the Venice Film Festival yesterday with Salma Hayek, director
Julie Taymor, and co-stars Alfred Molina and Valeria Golino in attendance. Whether or
not it will walk away with the Golden Lion is unknown, but it's already scored a favorable
Variety review. One
thing that is interesting about the review is that while some of the early reviews of Frida
have made a point to mention that EN helped rewrite the script, this detail is not included, nor
is his name in the screenplay credits in the review. This was a little puzzling since he was credited on
Miramax's Frida preliminary website months ago. When I
doubled-checked the Miramax site this morning, his name was not among the screenplay credits. Maybe it has something to do with
WGA rules. Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. Variety
review. I'm
still entrenched in my move so hopefully, I'll be able to add little more to the site in the next few days.

Fear Itself
|
|
EN will be one of the producers of Fear Itself, which is "loosely based" on
Sam Peckinpah's Straw Dogs which starred Dustin Hoffman. The script was written by Stuart
Blumberg, EN's longtime friend and the screenwriter/producer of Keeping the Faith.
Today's Variety had an article on the project, announcing that it will be directed by Swimfan's
John Polson. This
project was mentioned back in 2000 by the now defunct Mr. Showbiz website.
In their "Deadline Hollywood" section (6/22/00), it was reported by
"sources" that EN was "determined to star in and direct" a
Straw Dogs remake. EN won't be directing it but will he be in it? There's no mention of
that in today's Variety, although it also does state that they
will be looking to cast it quickly, so hopefully we'll find out in a hurry. Fear Itself.
Greg's Previews states that filming on The Italian Job
started on August 3rd on the Paramount in Los Angeles (they will later move to
Italy). EN's part in the film most likely would have already been filmed or
should be filmed within the next few days since he is about to start a 10 week
run in Burn This at the end of this month. Frida
will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival (in
addition to the Venice Festival)

Favorable Frida review
|
|
FOXnews.com posted a favorable Frida review that credited
the quality of the film to the script rewrite made by EN. Whether
or not this
is a fair assumption by the reviewer (not having viewed the versions of the
scripts before EN's rewrite), it is a look at the most recent cut
of the film right before the Venice premiere. Edward Norton Rewrites Salma Hayek

Burn This details
|
|
An article in today's New York Times provides more information on the Signature
Theatre Company's production of Lanford Wilson's "Burn This" that will star EN and Catherine Keener.
Rehearsals start at the end of July, previews start Aug 27, and opening night will be Sept 19.
Squeezing in a Run [The New York Times requested that I remove this article from my website]. The Signature Theatre's Website reports
that tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, June 26 for the general public. The production will run from
August 27- November 3, 2002. This schedule appears to conflict with the The
Italian Job, which is supposed to start filming in late July/early August in Italy and Los Angeles.
EN will be right in the middle of the play when Red Dragon and
Frida are released so it should be quite difficult to fit in the pre-release
press interviews (or even attending the premieres, unless they're on a Monday).

25th Hour set report
|
|
Dark Horizons posted this report on yesterday's 25th Hour filming
[Thanks to Joanne for the info!]
The 25th Hour: Its only relatively mundane exterior shooting, but what
a line-up was seen on the NYC streets this week and 'The Ideaist' has this
report:
"I live on the street (89th Street between
Lexington & 3rd Ave.) in which multiple scenes were shot for Spike Lee's
movie, "The 25th Hour" on June 19, 2002. At about 6pm or so, a scene taking
place outside a brownstone in which Tony Siragusa (former defensive lineman for
the Baltimore Ravens) was waiting outside until Edward Norton walks out of the
brownstone. Tobey Maguire was also on the set during the day shooting. Later on,
in the evening (at about 8/9PM) a scene took place involving Barry Pepper,
Edward Norton, and Philip Seymour Hoffman was shot. Basically, it's a simple
scene in which Barry Pepper, Edward Norton, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman arrive
at the very same brownstone in a black Lincoln Towncar, get out, and walk into
the brownstone."

NEW EN Project: The Italian Job
|
|
Today's Hollywood Reporter states that
EN will star in The Italian Job opposite Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron under the
direction of F. Gary Gray. This is a remake of the 1969 movie starring Michael Caine and Benny Hill.
The film is scheduled to start shooting in late July/
early August which would make this the third film EN will shoot back-to-back: he is currently filming
The 25th Hour, which he started right after completing
Red Dragon. Norton joins up with heist 'Job' for Par, Gray

Sunset Boulevard rumor
|
|
Today's Dark Horizons has a
rumor of EN being sought for the lead in the film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Weber
musical "Sunset Boulevard" (See below). Hopefully, the site will be back to it's usual
state this afternoon.
Sunset Boulevard: There's always no shortage of rumours about Andrew
Lloyd Weber musicals becoming films...and here's a bunch more with thanks to
'Adam': "After Bombay Dreams opens in the West End
later this year, Webber wants to really concentrate on getting movies made. Now
that both "Cats" and "StarlightExpress" have closed in London he could do with
the money.
Encouraged by the success of the UK tour he wants to fast tracked "Sunset
Boulevard" for production. They have outlined who they want for the picture and
are on the verge of starting to approach them. Either Joel Schumacher or Skekar
Kapur is wanted for director, whilst Glenn Close, Bette Midler and Liza Minnelli
are the favorites for Norma Desmond.
Edward Norton, Robert Downey, Jr and Hugh Jackman are wanted for the male
lead, Joe Gillis. Kate Winslet, Faith Hill and Martine McCutcheon are in line
for Betty, with Patrick Stewart as Max and Albert Finney as Cecil B. De Mille.
Julie Taymor, director of The Lion King on Broadway is wanted for a re-make of
"Jesus Christ Superstar"

EN not in Open Range
|
|
The Calgary Sun (5/7/02) cleared up some of yesterday's confusion. Although EN was reported to
have dined with Kevin Costner at a Calgary restaurant this past weekend, EN's representatives state that he will not be in Costner's
upcoming film Open Range [Thanks to Deborah for the info!].

Dreamcatchers Auction, casting news?, 25th Hour filming starts next week
|
|
EN has donated two posters to raise money for the DreamCatchers Foundation: an
American History X poster that he signed (now on auction) and a Keeping the Faith poster signed by
EN, Jenna Elfman, and Ben Stiller (auction starts on May 10th). Don't miss your chance to own a signed
item and raise money for Charity Hollywood Charities (go to the auction section)
Just as I'm trying to figure out whether EN is on the set of Red Dragon or
the 25th Hour, the Calgary Sun (5/6/02) reports that EN and Kevin
Costner are in Calgary for a few days in getting ready to shoot Costner's next film "Open Range," which starts filming
in June [Thanks to Deborah for the info!]. EN has never been mentioned in connection with this film in any of the trade papers. I
don't know whether he will be in the film or whether he is just in Calgary having dinner between films with Costner or
whether they mistook another person for EN. The 25th Hour will start shooting next week
according to a Hollywood Reporter article announcing that Anna Paquin has joined the cast.

Filming confusion
|
|
WHAT'S EN FILMING NOW? A little confusion this morning (at least for me). The Hollywood Reporter mentions
today that The 25th Hour is currently shooting in New York. Yesterday, Variety.com reported that director
Brett Ratner is "preparing to wrap" Red Dragon (most recently reported filming location was in the
Florida Keys). EN is the lead in both films so is EN currently on the set of Red Dragon or
The 25th Hour or are one or both of them shooting scenes without his character? It seems like EN will be
jumping from one film to another without a break or a rehearsal period. Check all the info on The 25th Hour and Red Dragon
