Red Dragon interview
|
|
13thstreet.com
has posted an interview with Red Dragon producer Dino DeLaurentiis, which clears up some rumors that
keep popping up about Red Dragon. He also mentions why he decided to cast Edward Norton as Will Graham:
Because he's a great actor. With every single character in Red Dragon,
we needed a great actor. It's an acting piece. For the (other) characters,
also we needed great actors. For instance, for Reba, we chose Emily
Watson because she's a great actor, not because she's a name. Ed Norton is
a great actor and for me the chemistry, the teaming, the combination between Ed
Norton and Anthony Hopkins within the structure we have for them in the
movie.

Early photos of EN
|
|
Some early photos that include EN taken at a 1986 Wilderness Ventures
trip through the Pacific Northwest are now up. They were very generously provided by another member of the trip, Chad Ragland ,
who asks that if anyone else who was on that trip reads this, please contact him at chadrag@home.com.
See the photos!. Some interesting Red Dragon info off the
Dark Horizons site: "Cinefantastique reports that Dino DeLaurentiis
may in fact not be using Director Brett Ratner after all, rather trying to go for the Oscar winning 'Silence' mold
and thus hire someone more Academy pleasable like Scorsese, Aronofsky or
Soderbergh."

Anthony Hopkins interview
|
|
I was excited to find today's Reuters interview with Anthony Hopkins from a press conference for the release of the
Hannibal and Silence of the Lambs special edition DVDs, thinking it would
provide some new Red Dragon info. I was instead confused by Hopkins' uncertainty over the project and the fact that EN was not
mentioned. It turns out that the press conference was held over a month ago (this is not made clear in the article), so please consider
the Red Dragon info from it as dated. Hopkins is in final talks for the project. Anthony

EN in Red Dragon
|
|
It's CONFIRMED. The front page of today's Daily Variety reports that EN
has signed on for the lead role of FBI special agent Will Graham in Red Dragon). Anthony
Hopkins is in final talks to return to the role of Hannibal Lecter. The Hollywood
Reporter mentions that Emily Watson is talks to for the role of Reba, the blind
woman who unknowingly gets involved with The Dragon, a serial killer. EN's interest in the project was
announced earlier by 13thStreet.com.
(Read more about the project. EN is a great admirer of Anthony Hopkins' work. He presented Hopkins with the Modern Master award
at the 2000 Santa Barbara Film Festival and is featured with him in a March 2000 GQ article
The Conversations. Filming is scheduled to
begin at the end of November.

Casting rumors
|
|
More casting possibilities? Movieline's September issue mentions that director Joel
Schumacher is planning on a film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On The Road and that EN is
one of the actors they are approaching for a lead role. I'm more fascinated with the Red Dragon casting
rumor listed below. But how much can you trust it? I'm giving it a lot a weight particularly after
reading (on Upcomingmovies.com) that
13thStreet.com, the website that broke the rumor, is owned by
Universal (the studio making the film). The Web's Film Release Schedule
and Upcomingmovies.com both give a U.S.
release date for Death to Smoochy as March 22, 2002 (keep in mind: release dates tend to change). If
you missed EN's guest voice appearance on The Simpsons, it repeats THIS SUNDAY and EN's
Letterman appearance will repeat THIS WEDNESDAY (Aug 15) [Thanks to Joanne for the info!]

Casting rumor - Red Dragon
|
|
CASTING RUMOR: Apparently EN is in negotiations to play Will Graham in Red Dragon, the
prequel to The Silence of the Lambs, for director Brett Ratner. Will Graham ended up catching
serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter, but
was injured severely both physically and psychologically in the process. In the Thomas Harris novel, Graham
tries to find a new serial killer with a little help from Lecter, while Lecter tries to lead the killer directly
to Graham. This novel had previously been made into the movie "Manhunter" directed by Michael Mann.

Leave EN a B-day message
|
|
Edward Norton's 32nd birthday is on August 18th. I've set up a guestbook where you can post
a birthday message. I don't know if EN will read this guestbook, but why not give it a try.
Leave EN a birthday message. If you want to write him a letter, the address is below.
Also of some interest are two new articles: another EN interview on The Score- Score one for Edward Norton --
Scholarly Star and a NY Post article on EN's support of childhood friend Mark Levine in a NY City Council
campaign. [Thanks to Joanne for the articles!]. EN's address is below:

I've posted audio and pics from EN's
Daily Show appearance, plus an article Edward Norton talks about
his hometown of Baltimore [Thanks to Sonia for the article!]. I ended up starting a
Frequently Asked Questions Page (F.A.Q.s) because I'm so tired of the useless pile of misinformation on EN
floating about on the web. It may look a little small now, but these are all the questions I could deal with at 2 AM.

Lots of Smoochy
|
|
The Score is now in theaters, but there is a bunch of info on Death to Smoochy.
First, Entertainment Weekly features a pic of Smoochy on Ice with Olympian Elvis Stojko and a paragraph
mentioning EN's skill on skates - Rink Leader. I also found a Canadian
newspaper article from April on a 10 year-old who describes her experiences on the set -
Movie role cool job for local skater.
(some plot spoilers). Also, an article from May's Premiere magazine mentions a Death to Smoochy costuming quandry-
How do you satsify EN's wish to wear Armani in the movie, but keep his character a hippie? Answer: Armani made a hemp suit
for EN. The Changing of The Garb.
EN will be making an appearance NEXT WEEK on the Daily Show (hosted by his Smoochy costar Jon Stewart).

The Score press
|
|
Instead of downplaying the tension that was rumored on the set of The Score,
an article in this week's Time magazine
actually describes it to be worse than previously reported. Time's
How To Make A Score (plus the Associated Press's
Marlon Brando Clashes with Frank Oz, a rehash of the Time
article) goes into detail on the clashes between Brando and director Frank Oz. Note that Time
reports these confrontations as facts not as rumors, including an earlier reported rumor where Brando
demanded that De Niro direct him rather than Oz. This comes on the heels of a Montreal
Gazette article Settling the Score stories, where
The Score publicist Peter Silbermann said that Oz was "tremendously hurt by the allegations
that he was not the film's sole director" and confirmed that he did direct each scene, although there
were disagreements on the set. Other interesting additions to the site include a Toronto Sun interview
with EN Edward Norton knows The Score [Thanks to Joanne for the
article!] and a New York Times article on Brando and his career called
Seeking to Map Brando's Island and an L.A. Times article on Oz called

Smoochy script review
|
|
Aint-It-Cool-News (6/11/01) had an preview of Robin Williams' upcoming projects, including
a favorable script review of the August 11, 2000 draft of Death to Smoochy. If you don't like PLOT SPOILERS, you may want to pass on
it since this one gives away exactly how the beginning scenes are set up. One thing to keep in mind if you do read it - filming started mid-January, so there may have been
considerable changes to the script since this draft was written. AICN Death to Smoochy script review

Smoochy script review

A script review of Death to Smoochy has been posted on TNMC
Movies. It is a very favorable review of the script. The review does contain some PLOT SPOILERS (details but no endings or twists)
so you may want to skip it if it would ruin the movie for you Death to Smoochy script review. Please note
that the review does not mention the date of the script, so we don't know if it is a recent draft or if it has undergone several revisions. The
reviewer doesn't mention the details of the ending. Earlier, it was reported that director Danny De Vito didn't like the way the ending turned out
and rewrites and reshoots had to be completed.

EN and the Senator Theatre
|
|
Edward Norton fired a few shots in a battle over Pearl Harbor that recently occurred in Baltimore. Baltimore's
historic Senator Theatre ("a 62-year-old theater that actually stopped a film showing on
Dec. 7, 1941, to tell the audience about the attack on Pearl Harbor") attempted to book Pearl Harbor only to have the request refused
by Disney, who chose instead a multiplex. EN first saw Star Wars at the Senator and has held benefit premieres for four of his movies there: Primal Fear,
Everyone Says I Love You, Rounders, and his directorial debut Keeping the Faith. Barry Levinson, John Waters and author
Tom Clancy also have been getting involved in this confrontation.
CBS NEWS SUNDAY MORNING will air a segment on this on SUNDAY, MAY 27TH. The Senator has posted articles on this situation including a
UPI article from which I took this quote:
Norton suggests that Disney will lose ticket sales by skipping Kiefaber's theater.
"'Pearl Harbor' running at the Senator," he said, "will do better business than it will do anywhere else
in the area. The distributors -- I know for a fact from talking to them -- would rather have the movie
play there because they know they'll pack it and it's the kind of movie that should play there."
Norton said the multiplex operators put pressure on the distributors because they have so many
screens they can say, in effect, "give the movie to us or we won't run your other movies." He said
distributors "have broader release goals for the year and they've got to cut these deals with chain
owners."
