News
Jun 15, 2008- Variety reports that The Incredible Hulk has scored an estimated $54.5 million domestically in the weekend box office, the second-best gross ever for Father's Day weekend.
Unfortunately, not all the the press about EN and his contribution to the Hulk has been favorable. Variety's Anne Thompson corrects a lot of misconceptions about EN's work on the Hulk on her blog. I feel that it fills in some important gaps: how much of the screenplay did EN actually write, why was he denied screenwriter credit, what went on in the editing disagreements between him and Marvel, and why didn't he do more publicity around the opening of the film. This blog entry addresses these items and I am including it below.
June 13, 2008
Incredible Hulk: Setting the Record Straight
The real question when looking at The Incredible Hulk--given all the sturm-and-drang in the media about Edward Norton--is what did he contribute to this movie?
Here's the real deal:
Zak Penn wrote the original script, which includes two pivotal scenes from his 16-year-old first screenplay for the Hulk, which was not used on the Ang Lee movie written by James Schamus. Marvel came back to Penn and wanted the two scenes in the movie: Bruce Banner jumping out of a helicopter to the earth below, not knowing whether or not he would morph into Hulk, and a lovemaking scene in a motel where Banner's rising heart rate becomes an issue. Both are among the best scenes in the final movie.
When Marvel approached Norton to do The Incredible Hulk, he initially declined. They asked him to meet with director Louis Leterrier (Transporter) to discuss his objections to doing the movie; there Norton offered some ideas as to where he'd want it to go. Marvel agreed to hire a screenwriter to work with him. This is totally normal. At this point Penn was off the movie.
Marvel realized they didn't have time to hire a new writer and asked Norton to do it, offering him an uncredited producer credit as well. With about two months to go before the movie started filming, Norton did a page one rewrite--knowing that he couldn't do anything radical, because sets were being built, locations found, etc. The entire Brazil sequence was already story-boarded.
So Norton mostly changed dialogue, filled in gaps of motivation and developed character. For example, the scenes in Brazil about finding a serum in the Amazon to cure him, and Banner's emails with Tim Blake Nelson, were Norton adds. Marvel agreed to shoot Norton's script.
The Incredible Hulk filming was well under way in Toronto when the team flew to San Diego to do a Comic-Con panel last July. When the panel moderator asked Norton to address his enhanced role on the film--which was supposed to be revealed on the panel, but not by him--both Norton and producer Gale Ann Hurd recognized that his announcing his own role as screenwriter would play badly. And so it did.
In post-production, when it came time to edit the movie, Marvel wanted a streamlined cut. Norton wanted more of his stuff, some 20 minutes worth. Norton is a serious actor who wants to be cool. Marvel convinced him to star in a movie on which he would have considerable input as writer-co-producer-star. A collision was inevitable. Their heated debate was leaked to Deadline Hollywood. Marvel had final cut, not Norton. He did not get his way. Some 50 minutes of outtakes will turn up on the DVD.
Post-Ang Lee, Marvel wanted the most commercial version of the movie, while Norton wanted something more nuanced.
As for the script, Marvel submitted both Penn and Norton (under his pseudonym, Edward Harrison) to the Writers' Guild; Penn (who had substantial economic incentives to want to win the arbitration) wrote an impassioned argument that Norton had not considerably changed his screenplay. The Guild tends to favor plot, structure and pre-exisiting characters over dialogue. Given the final version of the movie, they gave the sole credit to Penn. (Another early writer was seeking story by credit and didn't get anywhere.)
Interestingly, the reviews have been mixed, 61 on metacritic; some have criticized the movie for being light on character. Here's Todd McCarthy's review and a funny one in The Guardian.
When it came to marketing the pic, Universal's Adam Fogleson talked with Norton about his schedule and what PR they wanted him to do. The studio wanted to sell the Hulk, not Norton, finally--they avoided the traditional print junket in favor of a more superficial Adam Sandler TV-friendly media sell (not opening up to lots of questions about what Norton wanted the movie to be). Norton did Access Hollywood, Jimmy Kimmel (see below), lots of Internet stuff and attended the L.A. premiere. Then, as planned, he went off to Africa for his own purposes--and will do Japan PAs later this month.
This LAT Norton story addresses his image problems, which are substantial. He is seen as a gifted writer and actor, but opinionated and persnickety.
This Jimmy Kimmel spoof heads in the right direction.
Finally, my sense is that Norton's issues were with Marvel, which misled him into believing that he would have more control over the picture than in fact he did. Norton didn't take his issues to the press. When told about Deadline Hollywood, he had never heard of the blog. He's fine with Universal. Here's EW, with Norton's statement. Whether Norton will play Hulk again remains to be seen.
It's probably time for Norton to take charge via directing. (He debuted with the 2000 relationship comedy Keeping the Faith and has been developing Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn as a directing vehicle.) The smartest movie stars--Clint Eastwood, Warren Beatty, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford, George Clooney and others--have figured out how to take control of their careers. Instead of fighting with studios over final cut, they earn it.
UPDATE: Norton is already producing: 2005's Down in the Valley and 2006's Painted Veil, plus Tim Blake Nelson's upcoming comedy thriller Leaves of Grass and a doc about Senator and presidential candidate Barack Obama

Jun 13, 2008- The Associated Press talks about the Hulk and the Marvel superhero franchises.
Jun 12 - PM update- EN's comedy skit is on the PRIMETIME special of Jimmy Kimmel Live, not the late night. I didn't point this out in earlier updates because I didn't figure it out until right before it started.
Rotten Tomatoes has The Incredible Hulk running 73% favorable among the reviews to date. The Washington Post gives Hulk a good review and even rates it a critic's pick. Roger Ebert give the film 2 and a half stars (the users on his site rate it four stars).
The next four reviews of the Hulk rate it as good but not outstanding: The New York Times, The LA Times, Chicago Tribune, and USA Today. Wired gives it a good review and singles out Tim Roth with getting the movie's best bits. But after all these reviews, what really matters in the long run is the box office. After this weekend, we should know whether there are any more Hulk movies in EN's future.
LA Times's Calendar Live has a photo feature on EN and his relationship with studios over the years. Contrary to the LA Times assertion, EN has done press for the film: red carpet interviews, the Moviefone interviews, the Jimmy Kimmel skit. Calendar Live also has a photo gallery comparing EN to Lou Ferrigno

Apr 24, 2008- Tim Roth talked about his character The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk to MTV news. Also, producer Gale Anne Hurd talked to Sci Fi Wire about how important EN was to
the film.
Apr 23, 2008- The Incredible Hulk is in Entertainment Weekly's Summer Movie
Preview (Indiana Jones cover). This is the same article that I mentioned my April 16 update that contains EN's first response to the coverage of his reported disagreements with Marvel over the Hulk: 'The Incredible Hulk': Behind-the-Scenes Drama.
SciFi Wire has an interview with Hulk director Louis Leterrier. Leterrier blames the press (specifically the blogger who first reported the story) for making too much out of the disagreements. I noticed something a little strange in the Sci-Fi Wire article: "Asked if he found it difficult to work with Norton, Leterrier said 'No.' 'For example, I never, ever heard about the [rumored] Edward Norton problems [with director Tony Kaye] on American History X,'" However, in the earlier EW article, Leterrier talked about being nervous when EN was hired: ''The stories I heard about Edward — they scared the bejesus out of me,'' he says. ''I was scared the guy would come in and say, 'All right, you're a little French director who's just done action movies, so you stick to the action and I'll do the drama.''' So if Leterrier hadn't heard the AHX story, what were the EN stories that "scared the bejesus" out of him?
More Incredible Hulk pics are up at Empire Magazine Online [Thanks to Mary Beth and Tenika for the info!!!]. New Hulk footage was screened at the NY Comic Con which featured Louis Leterrier, Tim Roth, producers Kevin Feige and Gale Anne Hurd, and Lou Ferrigno. IGN: NYCC 08: New Hulk Footage Screened and Cinematical: NYCC: 'The Incredible Hulk' Apr 18, 2008 io9.com points out that the "[Incredible Hulk] poster is - presumably intentionally - a recreation of one of the most famous Marvel covers ever: Amazing Spider-Man #50".
A sharp-eyed visitor noticed that Hulk poster reads "Screenplay by Zak Penn and Edward Harrison". According
to Courtney Love (People Vs. Larry Flynt special edition DVD cast commentary), Harrison is EN's middle name. I find it very
strange that EN would be using a pseudonym (although, this being a superhero film, maybe he wanted his own secret identity).
Why use a pseudonym when EN himself has stated that he wrote the script? I don't know. [Thanks to Donna for the info!!!]
Apr 16, 2008- EW.com has posted an article 'The Incredible Hulk': Behind-the-Scenes Drama which includes a statement by EN on his reported disagreements with Marvel over the film. Director Louis Leterrier also was interviewed for the article. According to
Leterrier, "[Marvel] wanted to release the most commercial film possible: lots of action and a running time under two hours. Norton and Leterrier, however, lobbied for a more meditative cut of the film that ran about two hours and 15 minutes." I think this article reveals an important point that has not been brought up in any of the previous articles about this subject: both EN and director Leterrier were together on their vision for the film, rather than EN versus everyone else.
EW.com- 'The Incredible Hulk': Behind-the-Scenes Drama
THE FULL TEXT OF EDWARD NORTON'S E-MAILED STATEMENT
"Like so many people I've loved the story of The Hulk since I was a kid, so it was thrilling when Marvel asked me to write and help produce an altogether new screen incarnation, as well as play Bruce Banner. I grew up reading Marvel Comics and always loved the mythic dimension and contemporary themes in the stories, and I’m proud of the script I wrote. In every phase of production, including the editing, working with Louis Leterrier has been wonderful...I've never had a better partner, and the collaboration with all the rest of the creative team has been terrific. Every good movie gets forged through collaboration, and different ideas among people who are all committed and respect the validity of each other's opinions is the heart of filmmaking. Regrettably, our healthy process, which is and should be a private matter, was misrepresented publicly as a 'dispute,' seized on by people looking for a good story, and has been distorted to such a degree that it risks distracting from the film itself, which Marvel, Universal and I refuse to let happen. It has always been my firm conviction that films should speak for themselves and that knowing too much about how they are made diminishes the magic of watching them. All of us believe The Incredible Hulk will excite old fans and create new ones and be a huge hit...our focus has always been to deliver the Hulk that people have been waiting for and keep the worldwide love affair with the big green guy going strong.''

Mar 14, 2008- Today's NY Daily News has an article on the editing disagreements between EN and Marvel Studios over The Incredible Hulk. The story doesn't have much more to it than what was reported earlier by Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily (see March 11 update), but it does have a statement from EN's spokeswoman;
Edward was brought on board by Marvel as a producer, screenwriter and actor, so it shouldn't surprise anyone that he has a lot of creative input into the postproduction process. His deal was for all three and he takes those roles seriously. He and [director] Louis Leterrier are enjoying a terrific working relationship. Any discussions happening now are part of the normal creative process of making a movie, the give and take among everyone trying to make the best movie possible.

Mar 11, 2008- Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily has a report of editing conflicts between EN and Marvel Studios. Read the article below.
The Incredible Hulk trailer is on its way. It debuts Wednesday night at 9:56 pm on all the MTV channels and Spike TV and VH1. It gets shown Thursday at ShoWest. And it plays this weekend in front of Universal pics in the theaters. (But it's also being teased on YouTube now.) I'm told the pic's producer-screenwriter-star Edward Norton helped get the trailer ready last week and loves it.
But does he also love the movie? Not yet.
I'm told that's because Norton and Marvel are clashing over how to cut the pic. Insiders say Norton was "promised tremendous involvement and access" after Marvel invited him into the core team to rewrite Zak Penn's script. Says one insider, "There's a lot of posturing going on between Edward's camp and Marvel over how you edit the final version." Sources also tell me that, starting last night and continuing at least throughout today, the actor will be holed up with Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel, Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige, and director Louis Leterrier to try to "reach an amicable resolution" to this $150+ million film feud.
Some insiders blame Marvel for not accepting Norton's POV about the movie. "There's a problem. Marvel won't listen to Norton about the cut," one source claims. Some blame Norton, known to be prickly. (Remember his problems with Paramount over The Italian Job and with director Tony Kaye over American History X?) "Never let an actor write a script," one insider commented. "Marvel made a mistake letting the wolf into the hen house."
But I say that, after Ang Lee's troubled The Hulk left audiences cold, The Incredible Hulk needs Edward Norton's warm support if the pic's gonna have any street cred. Some fear things blowing up to the point where Norton might not publicize the movie. And Marvel is petrified that the new Hulk may be judged "prematurely and unfairly." (Or that bloggers will start claiming the Hulk franchise is cursed.)
Right now, Marvel is said to be about 4 to 5 weeks away from locking the movie for its June 13th release by Universal whose top execs haven't yet seen it ("though some marketing guys have been working off a rough cut that's in pretty good shape," I'm told). "At this stage you always have discussions about what's in the film and what's not going to be in the film. Everyone's very passionate, and Edward is very opinionated." Said another source, "There is a very healthy exchange of ideas going on. Discussions now are even more heated. But some of Ed's best movies have had this exact dynamic to them. Everyone's in the process of figuring it out and working it out. But I expect it'll all get resolved pretty quickly."

"I'm a big fan of Ed's. I was really thrilled that someone of Ed's caliber stepped up to play [Hulk] in the sequel," he said. "It's great. I'm sure his version will be incredible."
Feb 11, 2008- Hulk footage was shown at the Toy Fair in Germany. AICN has a report
It was great to see the first footage of the INCREDIBLE HULK. I think the
Ang Lee movie was terrible, but I have a lot of faith in this one. What we
saw looked like the first official trailer. The scene opens with Edward
Norton meditating. We see images of a lab, experiments, Banner escaping from
the (Russian?) military (led by William Hurt and Tim Roth), running in the
streets, kissing Liv Tyler, guns, shooting, more running… The ‘trailer’ ends
with Abomination walking towards Hulk. Remember the end of Rocky III? Apollo
Creed wants to hit Rocky in their friendly duel? That’s exactly the way the
trailer ends. Abomination wants to hit Hulk. Hulk wants to hit Abomination,
but before it actually happens the trailer is over. Abomination looks like a
Hulk with the Voldemort face from the first Harry Potter movie. A really
mean motha. He sure is a great opponent.
I thought the shown footage was awesome. It promises much more action than
the Ang Lee movie, a great love story and an even greater fight. Edward
Norton makes a great Bruce Banner. He isn’t that muscular which makes his
transformation into Hulk much more interesting and exciting. Imagine John
Cena as Bruce Banner! That would be completely wrong, wouldn’t it?
Jan 31, 2008- As mentioned below, EN gives an interview in this month's Total Film magazine, but that's not all. He was
also ranked Number 1 on Total Film's Hot 100 List, the hottest 100 people in Hollywood right now [Thanks to
Monica for the info!!!].
EDWARD NORTON - ACTOR/WRITER/DIRECTOR/PRODUCER
Who knew? Behind the New York cool and intimidating IQ is the beating green heart of... a geek. Edward Norton:
Marvel kid. Cast as the Incredible Hulk, to general surprise and fan excitement, Norton is set to pulverise 2008.
Recently at his Fight Club-equalling best in 2005’s brilliant but underseen Down In The Valley, before starring in
sleeper hit The Illusionist, he’s now setting his sights on the blockbuster, zeroing in on Marvel’s most iconic
franchise. Producer, writer, star, he’s rebooting Bruce Banner and rescuing a moribund series he’s loved since knee
high. So, he’s bringing brains to the brawn, but smarts without snobbery – he adores the material and is embroiled
in every aspect, from script to effects work, which he’s currently beavering away on in Los Angeles. Now bringing
box office clout to his enduring credibility – and producing his own work through Class Five Films – Norton is our
guy and 2008 is his year.
What’s next? Gavin O’Connor’s cop corruption drama Pride And Glory, playing twins in Tim Blake Nelson’s
comedy Leaves Of Grass and a certain big, green mean machine...
Jan 23, 2008- Today's The Sun has comments
from EN on the Hulk from the upcoming Total Film magazine. Apparently, EN is looking forward to Hulk sequels.
Ed dismisses Hulk connection
Ed dismisses Hulk connection
By ALISON MALONEY
Published: Today
EDWARD NORTON has dismissed any connection between The Incredible Hulk and the last Hulk movie.
The 2003 movie starring ERIC BANA was panned by critics and Norton was quick to distance his new film from it.
“First off it’s utterly unrelated to that film,” he said, in this month’s Total Film magazine.
“This is in no way a response to it or picking up from it.
"I think like Chris Nolan and those guys did with Batman, we just said: 'We’re going to start completely with our
own version of this myth or saga.'
And the Fight Club star revealed that he turned down the part of Bruce Banner and his alter ego before being
wooed by the chance to write the screenplay himself.
“When the phone rings and someone says, ‘Hey, would you be interested in the big green guy?” there’s that part of
all of us that doesn’t want to look like an idiot,” he admitted.
“There’s the wince factor or the defensive part of you that recoils at what the bad version of what that would
be. And I did that, basically. I said ‘no’ to it a couple of times.”
Now firmly on board Norton revealed that The Incredible Hulk is just the beginning.
“To me the whole thing was to envision it in multiple parts,” he said.
“We left a lot out on purpose. It’s definitely intended as chapter one.”

Tony Stark will be in The Incredible Hulk. "So the scene that was shot was for the Hulk with General
Thunderbolt who is very important to the Hulk. Anyway, Tony Stark meets with him - which of course is a straight
prelude to the Avengers Movie." [Thanks to Robin for the info!!!]
/film has a related
story that Jon Favreau wants to direct
an Avengers movie and wants the big name actors from the individual Marvel films.
If you've been following this site for a while, you'll remember that I wasn't happy that EN chose to do The
Incredible Hulk. This is not because I wouldn't want to see EN in a Hulk movie, it's that I don't want to see EN
in five Hulk movies. If a franchise film makes any money at the box office during the opening weekend, there seems
to already be talk about a sequel by Sunday afternoon. Not only are we faced with possibly more Hulk fims, but
Avengers films as well, which would take time away from EN making other films.

The Incredible Hulk actor films in the mosaic stairs of Selaron in Rio.
Edward Norton's time in "Carioca's" lands (carioca is the name given to
the natives of Rio de Janeiro) goes on at full speed. After filming in
Leblon, Catete and Santo Cristo, the actor expent more than 3 hours of
the 13th (November) in Lapa. Reason? The filming of THe Incredible
Hulk, with the Brazilian Débora Nascimento being part of the cast.
The scenes were shooted in the mosaic stairs created by the plastic
artist Sélaron, one of the tourist attractions of the region. The
filmings will continue at 14:00 until 15:00. Many takes were repeated.
Um
dia ao lado do 'Incrível Hulk' (Ego article- translation below)
A day next to The Incredible Hulk
An obstinate and careful actor. That is how Edward Norton is on the set
of The Incredible Hulk that has some scenes filmed in the favela
Tavares Bastos (my note: favelas are very poor and normally dangerous
neighbourhoods in San Paulo), to which Ego has access on the 7th November.
Since 10:00 am the actor that plays the green hero in the new version
for the cinema is on set. In one of the houses, temporarily transformed
into the general head quarters of the production, Norton, known in
Brazil for American History X and Fight Club, watches in a monitor with
director Louis Leterrier the rehearsals of the first recordings.
At 11:00 am is the moment for Norton to get into the character of Dr.
Bruce Banner, a scientist that transforms into the Hulk. In the plot,
Banner goes to Brazil to search for local plants to try to obtain a cure
to stop him transforming into the green creature.
CHASE IN TAVARES BASTOS
Norton films scenes in which Bruce is chased by the men of Emil
Blonsky, the villain Abomination, played by Tim Roth, who was also in action.
In Tavares Bastos the men chasing the Hulk are called “Men of Bope”
(my note: BOPE (Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, or
Special Police Operations Battalion), is the elite group of the Military
Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro) due to the black clothes they wear
and the weapons they carry.
This part of the film takes place in a narrow alley of the community,
known as Rua Cinco, and lasted until 13:10 when the team stopped for
lunch. Beyond Norton and Roth, William Hurt is also in Brazil to film.
Only Liv Tyler, who plays Betty Ross, was excluded of this Brazilian
excursion.
EDWARD NORTON: A PERFECTIONIST ACTOR
At 14:00 Edward Norton walks again looking for the next location that
would be in front of the pub Bar do Mineiro, in one of the entrances to
the favela. Talking to two of the members of the production team, the
actor wanted to know his position, where the cameras would be, and still
suggested a take to see a tent (my note: in the sense of poor house)
covered by a canvas under which a simpatico group of gentlemen were
playing domino. “We can film from that side to catch the canvas”, he
suggested. Norton is also the co-writer of the film script.
In the middle of the doubts of the actor, a child of the technical team
interrupted him to ask for a picture with him, and he was quickly
attended. After this, the actor went to the house where the production is
held and took a bath to refresh from the heat close to 36ºC, and
returned to film new chasing scenes.
MEN OF BOPE
Now is the turn of the Men of Bope (the real ones) who move into
action. They send off the paparazzi that were in a flagstone trying to take
pictures of the scenes.
The policemen are part of a special police quarter that makes Tavares
bastos the only favela in Rio de Janeiro without dealers or militias
In spite of being polite, the policemen, who also have supported the
filming team, were also very emphatic insisting the photographers to
descend. After the incident, the filming continued until 19:00.
FILMING IN OTHER LOCATIONS IN RIO
Moreover than Tavares Bastos, the team will film in Lapa, Ipanema,
Floresta and Tijuca. The images filmed in Brazil will be part of the first
part of the film, that will be premièred in June 2008.
The works were planned to be done from 5 to 16th November. But due to
the bad weather, works were started on the 6th, so the expectation is
that they will spread to the 17th of this month. This is better for the
extras, all of them locals that earn R $50 for day.
The technical team, stage design and security are also local. Some
local traders are not happy, because the production brings the drinks and
food that is consumed on set. A proof that not even The Incredible Hulk
is able to please everyone.

MTV
Movies Blog has comments from actors from the 2003 Hulk picture on the upcoming Incredible
Hulk
“The Incredible Hulk,” a reboot of Ang Lee’s 2003 take on “The Hulk,” isn’t
upsetting the actors from the last go-round, at least not enough to cause any
real tears. “Boo hoo,” said Sam Elliott, pretending to cry over being replaced
by William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. “That’s a little weird
[to see someone take your part]. But I happen to be a huge Edward Norton fan,
and I think he’s a great choice for the Hulk. I’m sure he’ll be incredible.”
Ditto for Jennifer Connelly, who played his daughter. “I love Liv [Tyler],”
Connelly said of the next Betty Ross. “She’s a friend of mine and I’m so excited
that she’s doing it and I can’t wait to see it. I love Ed [Norton] as well, and
I can’t wait to see what Ed does with it.”
Still, Elliott wishes they’d have considered using some of the 2003 cast,
“because I’d love to have done another one. But I’ll be looking forward to
seeing this one.”
Oct 24, 2007- Former Hulk Lou Ferrigno filmed a cameo in The Incredible Hulk and
had some complementary things to say about the film
Lou Ferrigno Says
Hulk Cameo A ‘Smash’
“I was in the movie. I just finished filming,” Ferrigno said, smiling. “It’s a spectacular movie.
Very impressive.”
Ever since 1977 when he began playing the character in a famous television series, Ferrigno has
had a lot of time to ruminate on the Hulk. Norton, he says, shares a similar obsession.
“We talked about it. I believe he rewrote the script because he’s very involved with the character,”
Ferrigno related. “He’s not just doing another movie, he wanted to be involved with the character. I think
that’s going to bring it to the next level.”
Lou went on to give Norton and the production his highest seal of approval, in fact, saying the work
they were doing on the film will “be like the TV series.”
“[Ed actually] reminds me a lot of Bill Bixby,” Ferrigno confessed, referencing the actor who played
Banner in the series. “He has a similar physique, similar personality. Ed is a very fine actor and it adds tremendous credibility for him to be involved with the movie.”
Another bit of casting news on the Hulk front:
411mania.com reports that Ty Burrell has been cast as Doc Samson. Burrell costarred with EN in the Signature Theatre Company's production of Burn This and also appeared in Down in the Valley with EN.

Aug 14, 2007- Tomorrow's
LA
Times has more on EN's screenwriting role on
The Incredible Hulk
Norton shows muscle on 'Hulk'
A few weeks ago, a minor controversy sprung out of Marvel's "Incredible Hulk" panel at Comic-Con that had a
lot of fans both scratching their heads and pointing their fingers. And no, it wasn't griping about Liv Tyler
being cast as Betty Ross or fears that the Hulk was going to CGI-fly again. As with most mini-scandals, it
turns out to have been both more and less than it first appeared to be.
When it was revealed that Edward Norton, who had been cast as the scientist-gone-green Bruce Banner, had
also written the script, it surprised and confused a lot of folks who thought that Zak Penn had written the
screenplay. Penn, who has worked on half a dozen Marvel movies, including the last two "X-Men" installments,
"Elektra" and, as one of his first Marvel assignments a dozen years ago, what eventually became the first,
Ang Lee-directed "Hulk," had actually spent a year writing the screenplay before Norton became involved.
At first blush, it looked like just another case of a screenwriter getting disrespected while a movie
star with a reputation for aggressive involvement in scripts had bullied his way into writing this one.
"Both panels were excellent for Marvel Studios," says Marvel Studios president of production Kevin
Feige, who was also there presenting "Iron Man." "I think the only bit of bungling on my part was not
clarifying Zak's role up there in front of 7,000 people, which I then tried to clarify in some round
tables I did 20 minutes later after the 'Iron Man' panel."
Of course, nothing prevented Norton from speaking up about Penn, and it didn't help that the actor,
by many accounts a very smart guy (and a closet comic book geek), had long since acquired a reputation
for stepping on writers' toes when it came to script revisions.
Widely credited with doing substantial uncredited work on "Frida" for then-girlfriend Salma Hayek
(who was the film's producer and star), Norton had also shown up on the set of "Red Dragon," for example,
with new script pages not only for his character but for Dr. Hannibal Lecter as well. Other people on the
film describe director Brett Ratner fighting with Norton over the issue, and Anthony Hopkins reportedly
expressed his comfort with speaking the original lines written by Ted Tally, an Oscar winner for his
adaptation of "Silence of the Lambs." (Norton's publicist maintains that Ratner asked him to write new pages.)
In the case of "Hulk," after another writer's treatment was declined in early 2006, Marvel hired
Penn, who wrote three drafts over a year. By spring 2007, Penn was about to go off to promote his
movie "The Grand," but the studio and the director, Louis Leterrier ("The Transporter"), still felt
that the screenplay needed work.
When Norton came in to meet about starring as Banner in April, the film had already been greenlighted
and there were just three months before shooting was scheduled to begin, just after Independence Day.
But Norton had well-established (if underground) writing experience and strong ideas about how to
separate the film from any confusion over its connection to the 2003 Ang Lee version by casting it
in a more distinct, starting-over vein like "Batman Begins" or "Casino Royale."
So Norton's initial deal included payment not just for his acting services but for his writing
talents too, with his draft contractually stipulated to be turned around in less than a month. As
it turned out, Norton delayed work on another screenplay job to do "Hulk," and he continues to
tweak the script as principal photography hits its halfway point outside Toronto.
Meanwhile, Penn is writing a big-budget version of "The Avengers" and yet another potential "X-Men" spinoff.
As for Norton's writing services, now that he's finally gone "legit" as a paid double threat,
other filmmakers may come calling. "Yes, he is that good a writer that I would definitely work with
him on another movie that he wasn't starring in," says Feige.
Robin noticed that one of the newest members of the Writers Guild of America East is an Edward Harrison Norton.

Aug 9, 2007- A curious development to yesterday's post on the
Cinematical
story with Zak Penn's comment. It's been removed and instead there is a non-explanation
posted at From
the Editor's Desk: "Yesterday morning, I wrote a post regarding Edward Norton's involvement
(screenwriting-wise) on next summer's The Incredible Hulk. For certain reasons (which I can't really go
into), I've had to pull back the post. Sorry for the inconvenience, and I promise to update you as soon as
I can." [Thanks to Robin for the info!!!]
Just Jared
has posted photos of EN and Liv Tyler on the set of The Incredible Hulk.
AICN has posted a little bit on the set of The
Incredible Hulk. but I'm going to give you just the interesting paragraph
Here's the mysterious part. Ed Norton was dressed in a red cap, a red jacket, and was carrying a red pizza
delivery case (the kind that keep pizza's warm), so it looked like he was playing a pizza delivery guy.
In this scene he was coming out of the house and putting the pizza case into a bicycle with a giant basket
for pizzas on the front. What the hell is going on? Is the Hulk delivering pizzas? Is this something he is
doing while he's on the run? Seems more Peter Parker than Bruce Banner, but I'll withhold judgment,
because I have no idea what was really going on. Strangely there were a few other guys with red hats and
caps scattered around the set. I'm not sure if they were stand-ins or stunt guys, or what.
Aug 8, 2007- Cinematical has comments from
Zak Penn (the former screenwriter of the Incredible Hulk). "Anyway, though Zak's contract does not
allow him to say one thing about the film (with the exception of what has already been said), he
did confirm that Edward Norton is now writing The Incredible Hulk. Exact words: 'I was writing it,
now Edward is.'" I had not been too ecstatic about Penn ever since I read the comment of Penn
referring to EN as "El Norte", but there was one thing in the Cinematical article that did bother me:
"Even more bizarre is that Penn's name has been completely erased from IMDb as having anything to do
with the film ... ever." I don't think that anyone deserves that fate.

Just an aside, I remember reading an Tribeca

can do to push the envelope a little bit to make everything more eco-friendly."
The coaches will advise on myriad aspects of production - recommending purchases, suggesting ways to

carbon-offsetting.

May 29 2007-Comics Continuum
has posted a Hulk synopsis
that was released by Universal Pictures
"The explosive, action-packed adventure in one of the all-time most popular superhero sagas unfolds
with a cure in reach for the world's most primal force of fury: The Incredible Hulk. We find scientist
Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) living in shadows, scouring the planet for an antidote. But the warmongers who
dream of abusing his powers won't leave him alone, nor will his need to be with the only woman he has ever
loved, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler).
"Upon returning to civilization, our brilliant doctor is ruthlessly pursued by The Abomination
(Tim Roth) -- a nightmarish beast of pure adrenaline and aggression whose powers match The Hulk's own.
A fight of comic-book proportions ensues as Banner must call upon the hero within to rescue New York City
from total destruction. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice --
accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or the creature he could permanently become: The Incredible Hulk."
May 9 2007-Variety.com
reports that
Tim Roth will play The Abomination in The Incredible Hulk. This is not the first time that EN and Roth
have worked together. In Everyone Says I Love You, they both
competed for the attention of Drew Barrymore.
May 4, 2007- Liv Tyler has signed on to play Betty Ross, Banner's love interest

Apr 25, 2007- The first controversy after the casting of EN as the Hulk has been the green versus grey
Hulk (I can't believe that I am reporting this). An interview with Marvel ex-CEO Avi Arad lead to speculation
that the Hulk would be gray
firstshowing.net: The
New Incredible Hulk Is Not Green - He's Grey?!. But days later on
EmpireOnline, Arad clarified his
remarks stating that the Hulk would be "a different shade of green" (maybe it's seafoam green). Another
interesting fact from this article is that EN turned down the earlier version directed by Ang Lee. Also in
the article "the casting of 'an amazing' Betty – Banner’s love interest – should be confirmed within the next
couple of days."
Who is this "amazing Betty"? Hollywoodgrind.com claims that
it's Jessica Biel, EN's co-star from The Illusionist. Let's talk Abomination. I'm sure speculation on
who will get the part of The Abomination is probably running wild, so we'll probably hear some names soon
[Thanks so much to Hugh for the info!!!]
Apr 17, 2007- Comingsoon.net
has posted an interview with Hulk screenwriter Zak Penn, who has effusive praise for EN
"I couldn't be happier about Ed Norton," he told us. "I worked on the first 'Hulk' movie and I remember
talking about how awesome it would be if we got Ed Norton to play this part. He really was up for it the
first time. I think Ed Norton's one of the best actors working, and even I was pretty shocked that he
wanted to do it. It's one of those rare things where it turned out better than I [expected]. Look,
there's a lot of really good actors who wanted to do it even before I wrote my script. I'm not just
saying this, but I cannot think of a better person to play Bruce Banner. In this case, Ed Norton would
have been at the top of my list.
"To me, the thing about Bruce is that he's a physicist, he's a super-smart guy who has a lot of
repressed anger. To me, that is the essential thing you need to know about him. He could be tall or
short, but you have to believe that he's a physicist, you have to believe that life is frustrating
for him physically. Ed went to Yale. He's a really smart guy. He has an intelligence that you can
see on-screen, which a lot of people who are great actors don't project that. He projects the guy that
is smarter than you, and he also projects anger in a lot of his movies, 'Fight Club' being the most obvious
example. If you think about 'Fight Club,' he has a lot of similarities to the Hulk as a character. Tyler Durden
is his Hulk."
We also asked Penn to describe his take on the movie in terms of whether it's a sequel, a revamp or
something different. "It's not going to be a sequel, but it's hard to describe," he admitted. "The best
description I would say is something like 'Batman Begins' where it's not necessarily out of continuity with
the other movies, though that was more of an origin story. It's much more of a reboot, the way that 'Aliens'
is a sequel to 'Alien,' but the kinds of movie are different. It keeps the mythology of the worlds, but it's a
totally different structure. It's more of an action movie than the first one was. This one is much more of a
thriller, I would say. I don't think it's unfair to say like a 'Bourne Identity' type feeling to it. Certainly
I've mentioned that the Bruce Jones comic book run were very influential or the TV series. It definitely harkens
back much more to that, emphasizing a guy on the run with a secret, who cannot feel emotion and cannot risk
having any close relationships with people for fear what it's going to do to them."
"The first movie is not about Bruce Banner dealing with the repercussions of being the Hulk, it's much more
about him becoming the Hulk," he continued. "He gets taken to a base and put under observation pretty quickly.
This movie is about Bruce Banner on the run and what life is like. There's stuff that I didn't want to deal
with that was in the first movie. You're not going to see anything about his father or his experiments or
anything, because to me, as a fan, that was the part that I found most frustrating and nooooooo dogs. I liked
the fight, but I didn't like the poodle."
I couldn't help thinking while I was reading the interview with Penn, "He hasn't yet had EN approach him
with script changes."
Apr 16, 2007- Variety
has just announced that EN will be playing Bruce Banner in "The Incredible Hulk". It will start
shooting in Toronto in the summer and it has an opening set for June 13, 2008."
Plus, "[Marvel] seeks to make a sequel that is less self-serious and more in line with the
comic series and TV show." [Thanks to Melanie for the news!!!].
