Woody Allen's musical chronicles the adventures (and misadventures) of the members of an upper class American family in search of love. Narrator DJ (Natasha Lyonne) assists her recently dumped father, Joe (Woody Allen), in convincing Von (Julia Roberts) that he is the perfect man for her by using information from her therapy sessions. Stepdad Bob (Alan Alda) is distraught over son Scott's (Lucas Haas) conversion to extremist views (in other words becoming a Republican), while mom Steffi (Goldie Hawn) fights for prison reforms (such as letting prisoners decorate their own cells). Sister Skylar (Drew Barrymore) is involved with sweet, dependable Holden (Edward Norton), until ex-con Charles Ferry (Tim Roth) catches her eye. Half sisters Lane and Laura (Gaby Hoffmann and Natalie Portman) both fall for the same guy, while DJ falls for several. The film is set in New York City, Venice, and Paris, with the charactersrandomly bursting into song. Everyone Says I Love You is such a visual film of romance that pictures describe
this film better than a simple summary. Please visit the photo gallery for a better idea of
the movie.
HoldenHere are some comments made by Edward Norton on his Everyone Says I Love You character Holden and on working with Woody Allen. These are from several different interviews and I have tried to piece them together into some sort of coherent structure. It may be slightly disjoined. "I think we agreed Holden is not unlike (Woody Allen's) characters in the sense he has a deluded sense of his own sex appeal. Holden is a romantic and he's not as hip as he'd like to believe he is. "Woody entrapped us. He informed the cast that it was a musical a month before we started shooting. It was a phone call in the middle of the night so we could all wake up in the morning going, 'Was that a dream or am I really doing a musical?' I've always thought Woody should do a musical because music is such an integral part of his films anyway. He uses music in such a pointed way for emotional effect. He wanted it to be as if these characters were just singing to themselves. We did a few takes where -- in all modesty -- I sounded pretty good and he said it was too good. 'You sound like Perry Como, let's do one more.' I cannot dance at all. The choreographer used my ineptitude very strategically. We kind of went with this 'guy gets trapped in a musical and makes the unfortunate decision to participate' theory. "When we shot the scene (Norton's Holden sings 'Just you, Just me' to Drew Barrymore's Skylar), I was not aware it would be the opening of the movie. When I saw it for the first time, they removed all sharp objects from the area to prevent me from doing bodily injury to myself. "We did this scene that was one of these classic Annie Hall shots. Drew Barrymore and I start walking along the edge of the park, up Fifth Avenue. It's this beautiful fall day. And then I sing 'I'm Through With Love.' And I was thinking, this is great, I can't believe this shot. Then Woody came over. 'We have some traffic noise so we lost it. But it doesn't really matter anyway, because in every other way, it was a complete disaster.' "It's a worthy and bold venture. I hope it plays. If nothing else, the music is really
hummable--though I dread the thought of a soundtrack album."
