Cal Ripken had some company yesterday while taking grounders at third base during batting practice - a thinly built guy wearing No. 11 who later had trouble making contact in the cage.

Typical good-field, no-hit actor.

Academy Award nominee Edward Norton, an avid Orioles fan who's in Baltimore for Monday's premiere of his new movie, The Score, at the Senator Theater, showed off a pretty good glove while standing next to Ripken. He was less impressive, though, while hitting against first base coach Eddie Murray.

Not that it mattered much to him. Norton, who grew up in Columbia and played third base at Wilde Lake High, was fulfilling a childhood dream. He never had taken batting practice before, though his mother - the late Robin Rouse Norton, daughter of famed developer James Rouse - once attended an Orioles fantasy camp. Yesterday was his moment.

"I plan to shake off the rust and be a fill-in," Norton said while clutching his Orioles jersey in the clubhouse.

Norton, who later threw out the game's ceremonial first pitch, has already made arrangements to attend Ripken's last three games at Camden Yards and the series in New York that will conclude the 2001 season - and Ripken's Hall of Fame career.

"For years, I've gone to Yankee Stadium with my Orioles cap and suffered abuse and jeers, chucked trash and everything," he said.

The list of celebrities milling around the cage yesterday included Jerry Rice, the NFL's all-time leading receiver, who was in Baltimore to promote a candy product that's licensed by Major League Baseball.
