Edward Norton Greatest Actor Of His Generation Lightens upFlicks magazineQ.So there was this Catholic priest and this rabbi...... EN.You know, I'd never seen anyone take that idea all the way in a film like we do in Keeping The Faith. We actually took time off writing the script at one point, and flipped through some movie guides to see if anyone else had used this idea of a rabbi and a priest who were best friends. But we couldn't find one, and that's unusual because it's hard to find anything new under the sun. Q. You bring a pretty hefty reputation as a dramatic actor to this film. Was there any concern that you might flounder in light comedy? EN.My writing partner, Stuart Bloomberg, and I were at one studio developing it and there was some grumbling that they didn't think I could do it. But these people have to be led around by the nose, and shown stuff because they don't believe anything. I never had any real concerns aboutthat, because it was a funny script and there were proper characters there. That grounded it for me and made it feel like something I could do. Q. Have done movie comedy before? EN. Well I thought Fight Club was funny, a total black comedy. And I did Everyone Says I Love You, but nobody saw that. Q. When did you also decide to direct Keeping The Faith? EN. Stu wrote the script, and I'd given him notes and worked on it with him a little. It was making me laugh and a lot of ideas were coming into our heads, so we decided to produce it together. Then, in one meeting, Stu said "I think you should do it!" I asked him if he thought it would work, and he said that it was so much ours already after all we'd done.We could give it to someone else, but then we'd be holding our breath to see if they got our jokes.
