Lee pic skedded for May lensing

By CATHY DUNKLEY, MICHAEL FLEMING

Variety, March 28, 2002

Philip Seymour Hoffman is in final negotiations and Brittany Murphy and Rosario Dawson are in talks to join the cast of "The 25th Hour."

Spike Lee will helm the Edward Norton-starrer, which is being financed and distributed by the Walt Disney Co. Production is skedded to start in May in New York.

Low-budget pic, produced by Nick Wechsler of Industry Entertainment and Lee's longtime associate Jon Kilik, was adapted by David Benioff from his own "The 25th Hour."

Pic details the last day of freedom for a young man before he begins a seven-year jail term for drug dealing. Prowling through the city with two close friends and his girlfriend, he is forced to re-examine his life.

At one time, songstress Alicia Keys was the odds-on fave to join Norton in the pic until her recording schedule made that unlikely.

Hoffman, repped by Paradigm, most recently appeared in the Sundance entry "Love Liza." He will also star in "Owning Mahowny," "Red Dragon" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "The X-4 Project" for Revolution Studios.

Murphy and Dawson are repped by ICM and Murphy also by AMG. Murphy recently starred in "Riding in Cars With Boys" and "Don't Say a Word"; Dawson's credits include "Sidewalks of New York" and "Men in Black 2."
